With 18 top teams competing, including three teams promoted from Liga 2—PSBS Biak, Malut United, and Semen Padang—the league promises a thrilling season. PSBS Biak has signed numerous new players, featuring a group of foreign players from Argentina. PSBS Biak holds the status of a promoted team in BRI Liga 1 2024/2025. The Pacific Storm was promoted after winning Liga 1 in the 2023/2024 season, defeating Semen Padang in the final. PSBS Biak has assembled the best talents from Papua to compete in BRI Liga 1 2024/2025. Jem Kelly Sroyer has been brought in from Persik Kediri. Todd Ferre, Donny Monim, and Yohanes Kandaimu have also returned. From the foreign contingent, Julian Velazquez, Gabriel Esparza, and Abel Arganaraz will debut in Indonesia. They all come from Argentina, like coach Juan Esnaider. PSBS Biak has also revamped their coaching staff. Regi Aditya, who led the Pacific Storm to promotion, cannot accompany the team due to licensing issues. Juan Esnaider has replaced him. As a player, Esnaider had a distinguished career. He has represented Juventus and Real Madrid. Additionally, the Argentine also played for Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, and River Plate. As a coach, Esnaider has previously managed Getafe. Unfortunately, he had limited success as he joined Getafe when the team was struggling and faced relegation from La Liga in the 2015/2016 season. Esnaider will be assisted by Robertino Pugliara, who is well-versed in Indonesian and Papuan football. Pugliara, a former Persipura player, can act as a translator and cultural liaison for Esnaider and PSBS Biak.
The match between Persija Jakarta and Barito Putera will be broadcasted live on Indosiar and Vidio on Saturday, August 10, 2024, starting at 15:30 WIB. Although Persija Jakarta reached the semifinals of the 2024 President’s Cup, their performance requires assessment as they suffered three consecutive defeats and conceded nine goals over five games. Barito Putera did not participate in the President’s Cup but has played several high-level friendly matches, including a 3-0 victory against Persebaya Surabaya. Games between Persija Jakarta and Barito Putera are known for their intensity. In the previous season, both matches in BRI Liga 1 ended in draws. Will this trend persist in the 2024/2025 season? Following their President’s Cup campaign, Persija Jakarta has been making adjustments. Center-back Muhammad Ferarri is confident they are prepared for their BRI Liga 1 2024/2025 debut. The 20-year-old is hopeful for an improved performance and believes that Jak Mania’s support will be crucial. With The Jakmania cheering from the stands, Ferarri believes it will boost the team’s energy. “I am very proud to play in front of Jak Mania again. At the end of last season in BRI Liga 1, we played in Bali with limited support. As a player, I need the support from Jak Mania to boost our spirit,” he said.
Despite the dominance of foreign coaches, local coaches still hold positions. However, unlike previous seasons, Aji Santoso’s name is absent from the BRI Liga 1 competition. The four local coaches competing in BRI Liga 1 2024/2025 are Hendri Susilo, Imran Nahumarury, Rahmad Darmawan, and Widodo C. Putro. Imran Nahumarury will attract considerable attention as he leads the newly promoted Malut United, which has made several high-profile signings. Imran is expected not only to devise tactics but also to maintain harmony in the dressing room.
Persib will start their season in BRI Liga 1 by facing Persib Bandung. They carry the title of defending champions in BRI Liga 1 2024/2025. Maung Bandung will attempt to defend their title, which is evident from their activity in the transfer market. Persib has brought in two local players with Indonesian national team labels, Dimas Drajad and Adam Alis. Both are believed to have a significant impact on the depth of Persib’s squad. Not only local players, but Persib has also made changes to their foreign player lineup.
